From Digital Vision to Couture Creation

Why, after more than thirty years in couture, I chose to openly embrace artificial intelligence as part of my design process.

Fashion has never stood still. Just as materials, technologies and methods of production continue to evolve, so does the creative process behind every garment. Every generation of designers has adopted new tools to develop ideas and transform them into reality.

My own journey began with a pencil, a sketchbook and countless hours spent searching for the perfect silhouette. Today, artificial intelligence has become part of that creative journey, and I have chosen not to hide it. On the contrary, I believe it is important to speak about it openly.

Not because AI should replace the designer, but because it can become an extraordinary tool in the hands of someone who understands garment construction, materials and craftsmanship.

After more than thirty years of creating couture, I can distinguish between a beautiful digital vision and a design that can truly be brought to life. I believe this ability is the greatest value an experienced designer brings to working with artificial intelligence.

AI can generate countless ideas within moments. It can surprise us with unexpected combinations and push the boundaries of imagination. What it cannot do is understand how a fabric will move, whether a construction is technically achievable, or how a garment will behave on a real woman's body.

That is where my work begins.

Every digital concept is carefully evaluated, refined and developed. I adjust proportions, select appropriate materials, resolve construction details and transform an initial vision into an original couture creation.

For this reason, I do not see artificial intelligence as competition or as a substitute for creativity. I see it as a new design tool, just as the pencil, watercolour sketches and later the computer once became part of a designer's creative process. AI expands creative possibilities, but the final decisions will always belong to the designer.

Lumina 2026 is the first Petra Kocianova collection created through this approach. Every design began as a digital concept, yet every couture piece is shaped by my aesthetic vision, more than three decades of experience and a deep respect for craftsmanship.

I believe that the future of couture does not lie in replacing people with technology, but in bringing the two together in a meaningful way. Couture has always evolved—from hand-drawn sketches to digital tools, and now to artificial intelligence. Every new technology has expanded the way designers create, yet none has ever replaced experience, intuition or imagination.

Every couture piece begins with an idea. It is then shaped through knowledge, construction, materials, craftsmanship and an understanding of the human body.

For me, artificial intelligence is not a replacement for creativity.

It is another tool in the hands of a designer.

The future of couture is not artificial.

It is deeply human.
